The festive season is upon us and with it, a seemingly endless run of events and obligations to attend to as the year comes to an end. Thankfully, Netflix US is streaming great new content this December. So grab a glass of eggnog (or a beer – it is summer in Australia, after all!) and decompress with new television series, movies and docos. Here are some highlights.

Following the reign of British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, TV series The Crown was a runaway success in its first season winning two Golden Globes and 3 Primetime Emmys. Starring Claire Foy (Wolf Hall) as Her Royal Highness, the costume drama drew high praise from critics and fans alike for its captivating writing and lavish costumes and locations. Season 2 promises more of the same and begins streaming December 8th.

If you want a dose of pure Hollywood action adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 should do the trick. A follow-up to the first movie which was a surprise hit, Vol. 2 impressed some critics enough to deem it better than the original. Starring an excellent cast including Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) and the voices of Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 8) and Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) keeps the winning formula of sci-fi action mixed with plenty of laughs coming in Vol. 2.

Ever wondered what Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (Loving) would look like as an Orc who is also a cop? Well, wonder no more! Bright takes place in a world where humans and mystical creatures live side by not-so-peaceful side. Therein lies the challenge when Will Smith’s (Suicide Squad) LAPD officer Daryl Ward is partnered with Joel Edgerton’s blue-faced Nick Jacoby, the very first Orc to be made a police officer. Directed by David Ayer (Fury, Suicide Squad), Bright should scratch your “blow things up, high stakes action” itch. Streaming from December 22.

Documentaries Voyeur, The Farthest and legendary David Attenborough’s Planet Earth II offer a variety of real life entertainment.

Look out for gangster family epic Peaky Blinders Season 4, Halt and Catch Fire Season 4 and Season 2 of Netflix Original, Easy. German language series Dark also premieres December 1. Those who loved Stranger Things might find this family saga with a supernatural twist appealing. Centred on the disappearance of two children in a German town, the series has several parallels including the use of 1980s nostalgia.

And for those attempting to entertain little ones over the silly season, make a note of Trolls Holiday Special streaming from December 6. For more Christmas family fun, Disney’s The Santa Clause 1,2 and 3 are all available to stream this month.
