August brings along plenty of great content, continuing an impressive pace with Twin Peaks, Power, Preacher and Younger, streaming your favourite shows at lightning speed, same day as the US. You also need to get into 70's inspired I'm Dying Up Here (directed by Jim Carrey) and Dice S2 with Andrew Dice Clay as himself, in a semi autobiographical mini series.
Spotlight on Stan Original: The Other Guy (trailer) stars Australian local comedy talent Matt Okine as AJ Amon, a successful radio host who finds himself back in the unpredictable dating scene for the first time in a decade, following the break up with his unfaithful girlfriend. Created by Okine and supported by Valene Kane, Harriet Dyer, Marg Downey, and more. All episodes streaming August 17.
Swedish Dicks (trailer - saved you the embarrassment of typing that into Google) brings together an aging stuntman and an overly optimistic Swedish DJ who form a private investigator firm - Swedish Dicks. Keanu Reeves occasionally stops by - and together they solve some of the strangest and oddest LA cases. Led by Peter Stormare (also from John Wick), and introducing Johan Glans.
Director Denis Villeneuve has two excellent movies out this month - check out Sicario (trailer) led by Emily Blunt as FBI Agent Kate Macer, sent to the Mexican border on a top mission to flush out drug cartels. In an action packed, juicy role, it's fantastic to see Blunt away from her usual 'pretty' characters Also starring Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro.
In Arrival (trailer) Amy Adams is a university language specialist Louise Banks, leading an elite team to investigate a hovering mysterious spacecraft. Time is running out as they race to discover the intentions of their visitor, as other countries threaten warfare against their identical spacecrafts. Described as thought provoking and philosophical, set aside August 22 for this arrival.
There's some excellent additions in action section, and plenty of big names to keep you entertained. How about Jason Stratham's The Mechanic (trailer), Bruce Willis in Harts War (trailer), Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in Training Day (trailer), Jake Gyllenhaal in South Paw (trailer), and Vin Diesel Classic XXX. trailer (trailer)
If you'd rather get out of your head and pick something more light hearted, sing along to Mamamia (trailer), or take some time to ponder the absurdity of Ryan Gosling and his girlfriend in Lars and the Real Girl (trailer). Or pick Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay (trailer), and keep He's Just Not That Into You for a night in with your best friend (trailer)
For something different, Stan has also included a selection of German director Werner Herzog's films, including Stroszek (1977), Heart of Glass (1976), The Enigma of Kasper Hauser (1974), and Fitzcarraldo (1982). Considered one of the greatest figures of New German Cinema, with 70 odd films to his name, take a look back to the past with his strong storytelling and masterful idealism.
